Localization (l10n)

Localization is a very important part in the internationalization of your products. Once you have decided which countries you want to target, it is time to make the information available to them in their own language so your potential clients and users can understand better what you can do for them. At Jensen Localization we have a long experience in this field, and among the products we have localized we can mention the following:

  • Websites of many different companies (hotels, banks, software and hardware developers)
  • User manuals of many different products (household objects, mobile devices, medical devices)
  • Software (ERP software, email software, text editors, mobile devices, medical software)
  • Pharmacological texts
  • Clinical tests and trials
  • Training courses for both e-learning and on-site learning
  • End User License Agreements for any kind of application
  • High-technical texts related to the automotive and heavy machinery industries (service parts, product sheets, user manuals)

Some of the tools we use for the translation and localization process are Trados Studio, Across, Memsource, MemoQ, Catalyst, Xbench, Translation Workspace, Passolo, etc.

Desktop publishing

When a document is translated, you need to apply the same layout as the original. It does not matter if it is a user guide, a flyer or a brochure. The target text needs to have the same layout as the original and it needs to be adapted to the local conventions.

Jensen Localization relies on partners specialized in DTP firms for more complex tasks, but the majority is always done by our in-house staff. After the DTP is done, our translators carry out a DTP check in order to make sure that the translation is correctly placed following the same order as the original.

Of the many checks done during the DTP process, we can mention checking for inconsistencies, spelling mistakes, typographical mistakes, correct insertion (and localization) of graphics, correct order of original.

Software testing

As with DTP, when the software text is localized, it is compiled and added to the original software application. Then, it goes through a testing phase, where not only linguistic issues are checked, but also functional features.

In software testing, as many of the translations have been done without context, it is especially important to run these checks, as a considerable part of the strings are context dependent. String length is carefully checked, because in many cases the translated string is longer than the original and it needs to fit in a button or box allocated to it. When it does not fit, string shortening is required.

Also, both in software and Online Help testing, it is important to check that buttons, links and other action buttons work properly and take you to the page they are linked to. Among other checks done during software/Online Help testing, are checking for inconsistencies, spelling mistakes, typographical mistakes, localization and correct insertion of graphics.

Sworn Translation

When a translated document needs to have a legal status, it needs to be signed by a sworn translator. The translation will not only reflect the purpose of the original text, but it will be adapted to the legal features of the target country.

Jensen Localization can offer sworn translation services in most of the European languages, for example English, Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Dutch, Danish, Finnish and Norwegian. All our translators are authorized by the corresponding official body and these translations are received by courier or postal email in our offices and then sent to the client’s after QA check. Clients can also come to our offices to collect the translations.

Typical documents Jensen Localization has been doing sworn translation of are birth certificates, academic histories, medical certifications and divorce certifications.

Post-Editing

Many companies started using Machine Translation to get faster translations and reduce costs. However, the results in some languages have not been as good as expected. This is most likely due to the quality of the content used to feed the MT engine and the type of Machine Translation system used. In any case, if you want to benefit from fast translations but you want to maintain a high quality, we recommend you to combine the use of Machine Translation with Human Post-Editing.

At Jensen Localization we can help you with the Post-Editing. After checking the quality of the output obtained with the MT system and after agreeing with you on the quality level desired we will let you know the amount of Post-Editing required or if it would be better to translate from scratch. By providing you feedback on the Post-Editing tasks done you will be able to fine-tune your system so that errors are not repeated in future jobs.

Transcreation

At Jensen Localization we believe in the specific features of each field and this is why we opened a new business line called Transcreation for marketing translation.

When you localize a product, you take into account the culture and the language conventions of your target market, but when it comes to localizing a marketing campaign, those cultural references take the center stage on your localization tasks.

Transcreators not only take into account the text they have to translate, but the visuals that go together with that text, the tone used, idioms and many other cultural aspects that are part of the campaign in the source language and they have to find the equivalences in the target language. It is more than transfering words from one language to another (translation) and more than converting cm in inches (localization).

Before starting the project and agreeing on rates, it is important to establish a Creative Adaptation Brief. This document, apart from specific instructions from the client, will include information such as the target audience, the tone of voice for the brand, the visuals that will support the text, and any other data that will help our transcreators to adapt your material to their language and have the same effect.

Jensen Localization reached an agreement with one of most experienced firms in this field to be able to provide you with Transcreation services so that your marketing campaign is as astonishing and fruitful as the original one.
